Assuming that introductory biology and chemistry are completed, it is very common for students to take:
Fall
- Organic Chemistry lecture (CHEM 3570 or CHEM 3590)
- Organic Chemistry lab (CHEM 2510 - take in either fall or spring)
- Evolution (BIOEE 2780) or Genetics (BIOGD 2810) or Physics (PHYS 1101 or PHYS 2207) or a Program of Study course
- College distribution course
- Elective
Spring
- Organic Chemistry lecture (CHEM 3580 or CHEM 3600). Chemistry 2570 (CHEM 2570) is one semester organic chemistry lecture course which fulfills the major requirement. This course is recommended for students who do not intend to go on to med-, vet- or dental school and for those who do not plan to go on to graduate school in a molecular biology field. For example, many Ecology concentrators enroll in this course.
- Organic Chemistry lab (CHEM 2510 - if not taken in the fall)
- Evolution (BIOEE 2780) or Genetics (BIOGD 2810) or Physics (PHYS 1102 or PHYS 2208) or a Program of Study course
- College distribution course
- Elective
Please note that student academic schedules can vary significantly for sophomore year and beyond. Students should meet with their faculty advisor to tailor their schedule to meet their individual needs.
During the sophomore year, it is typical for students interested in conducting undergraduate research to enroll in BIOG 2990 or BIOG 4990 (variable credit) after having secured a position in a laboratory.
Some students elect to study abroad during the second semester sophomore year.
