Graduate Studies

Graduate students apply to and are part of the Graduate School, which is organized in "Fields" rather than departments. Each field is headed by a Director of Graduate Studies--the equivalent of the chair of an academic department. Faculty members apply for membership to Fields, and must belong to a field in order to direct graduate students. Graduate Fields may be similar in faculty composition to academic departments and may have a similar (or even identical) name, but usually include members from several different departments united by common research interests.

The Graduate School provides a complete list of its Fields. Those most directly related to biology are listed here, with links to its Graduate School description. This description, in turn, provides links to the department or departments most closely associated with that Field, and, in some cases, to links with additional information about the Field. For those interested in finding detailed information about a particular Field, its faculty and their interests, these departmental links are very useful, because it is there that biographical sketches of faculty members and more detail on their research interests, courses taught, etc., will be found.
