2008 Wednesday Lunch Seminar Series

All students will meet each Wednesday from 12:00-1:00 pm in 119 Stimson Hall for lunch (our treat!) to discuss topics that are important for graduate study and research. Students will hear from faculty, graduate students and staff.

 
June 4  

First Meeting! Introductions / Guest Speaker
We will talk about ethical research practices in the academy. We’ll review and discuss case studites in various research disciplines.


June 11   Ethics and Conduct in Research
We will hear from students on the progress of research projects
June 18   Updates on research "Chalk Talks"
We will hear from students on the progress of research projects. Students will talk for 5 minutes about their project without using any audio visiual equipment or handouts.
June 25   Thinking about Graduate School!!
We will discuss what successful candidates consider when applying to gradate programs, including searching for top ranked programs in their fields, finding funding, the application process, and important tips on how to keep track of all of it. A panel of graduate students, faculty, and graduate admissions staff will join us.
July 2   Faculty Guest Speaker, Dr. Robert L. Harris, Africana Studies
Dr. Harris will join us for lunch and talk about the Changing Perspecitives in African American History over the past 30 years. He is the author of more than fifty published articles, book chapters, and dictionary entries, inlcuding the monograph Teaching African American History for the American Historical Association (3rd edition, 2001). He has been an editorial board member of the Journal of Negro History, the Western Journal of Black Studies,and Review of Afro-American Issues and Culture.
July 9   Talking About Your Research to a General Audience
In preparation for Symposium presentations, program staff will give pointers on how to prepare a presentation on an intricate research project to a general audience.
July 16   What Makes Successful Graduate School Applicant?
We’ll have faculty who serve on graduate admissions committees discuss what qualities they look for in a gradute student,
July 23   Prep for Symposium/Presentation Practice
We will practice our presentations and review our trip to the Symposium in Hartford, CT.
July 30   Final Presentations & Summer End Picnic
We will invite your research mentors and invited guest panelist from the summer to see your presentations from the Symposium. We will have a farewell luncheon.
