Current research projects in the laboratory include studying the induction of plant defenses after aphid feeding, natural variation in both the plant and the insect, and the effects of glucosinolates and myrosinase, a crucifer-specific insect defense system, on aphid resistance.

Biological processes generate many of the compounds that control air quality and atmospheric. This, coupled with the inputs to the atmosphere from humans (pollution) has led to dramatic changes in the atmosphere in the last hundred years , many of which are detrimental to human health and the sustainability of natural and agricultural ecosystems. We use a wide range of modern ecological methodologies to understand these processes.

We use zebrafish as a model system because they allow us to combine genetic and optical methods with more conventional physiological approaches to study the neural circuits. Research Description: Common Loons are long lived birds that maintain territories on northern fresh water lakes during the breeding season. They defend their territories in part with a vocal signal, the "yodel". We are studying the role that this signal plays in establishing territories and in maintaining them. We have found that each male loon has a characteristic yodel that is stable from year to year. If, however, a loon changes its territory it also changes its yodel. Why this should be the case is not clear.

I am also a collaborator on the Berkeley Spotted Hyena Project at the University of California, where I study sexual differentiation and mating behavior of naturally masculinized female mammals.
