| Research Description: The research in the Sparks lab is focused on understand ing how processes occurring in plants and soils control atmospheric chemistry. Biological processes generate many of the compounds that control air quality and atmospheric. This, coupled with the inputs to the atmosphere from humans (pollution) has led to dramatic changes in the atmosphere in the last hundred years , many of which are detrimental to human health and the sustainability of natural and agricultural ecosystems. We use a wide range of modern ecological methodologies to understand these processes. | |

They defend their territories in part with a vocal signal, the "yodel". We are studying the role that this signal plays in establishing territories and in maintaining them. We have found that each male loon has a characteristic yodel that is stable from year to year. If, however, a loon changes its territory it also changes its yodel. Why this should be the case is not clear. | |
